Hypnobirthing in Nottingham.
Calm, practical birth preparation for parents across Nottingham. Taught by Donna McHugh, accredited hypnobirthing teacher, registered nurse and mum of two, one-to-one in your own home, in a small group, or entirely online.
Nottingham is a straightforward drive south-east from The Birth Shed in Chesterfield, and I have taught parents across the city and the wider county. It is comfortably inside my 45-minute radius, so booking in-person sessions at your own kitchen table is genuinely easy to arrange.
One-to-one courses come to you anywhere in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. A lot of Nottingham parents pick the online version instead. It is the same four-week course, the same audio tracks and workbook, just from your own sofa.

Hi, I'm Donna. Founder of The Birth Shed.
My son's birth was not what I had imagined AT ALL. My plan was a spontaneous labour and pool birth, and instead I had an induction and a Caesarean birth, because of being diagnosed with pre-eclampsia.
A new passion was sparked inside of me the moment I learned about how much of a difference hypnobirthing makes. I wanted to teach it to others, so I can spread the word. I want to prevent traumatic and negative birth experiences. Women deserve better. You deserve better.

How the course works in practice.
Does hypnobirthing actually work? Is it backed by science?
Yes. Hypnobirthing draws on evidence-based techniques for managing the body's stress response and pain perception in labour. Research consistently shows hypnobirthing participants report calmer births, less need for medical pain relief, and better recovery experiences. The mind and body are connected, and your thoughts genuinely influence how your body works in labour.
Is hypnobirthing for first-time parents or experienced parents?
Both. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, hypnobirthing can help you feel more confident and prepared. Many first-time parents love having practical tools and knowledge to help them approach birth with confidence and to remove 'fear of the unknown'. And many parents who have given birth before tell me they wish they'd discovered hypnobirthing sooner, especially if previous experiences left them feeling anxious, disappointed or not how they had liked it to have gone. Every birth is different, and every parent deserves to feel informed, supported, and empowered.
Can hypnobirthing help during induction or medical interventions?
Definitely. One of the biggest misconceptions about hypnobirthing is that it's only useful if labour starts spontaneously and unfolds exactly as hoped. In reality, the breathing techniques, relaxation tools, decision-making skills, and confidence-building elements of hypnobirthing can be incredibly valuable during inductions, monitoring, assisted births, caesareans, and any unexpected twists and turns along the way. Of course, hypnobirthing can be used to increase the chances of an intervention free birth, spontaneous and physiological birth too, but should interventions be part of your story, hypnobirthing gives you the tools to support you, whatever birth looks like.
From parents who have been through it.
“I was feeling quite apprehensive about the birth of my second baby after having a c section with my first. Donna was so understanding, calm and knowledgeable and guided myself and my husband through hypnobirthing techniques that have boosted both our confidence so much. I am now feeling much more prepared and can actually say I am not fearful for the birth.”
Jessica Lloyd, hypnobirthing course
“I recently completed this baby massage course and would highly recommend it to any parents. Donna created such a relaxed, welcoming, and supportive environment, making both me and my baby feel comfortable from the very first session.”
